Meet your Practice Support Advisor

Dr Chris Appleby is a James Cook Ph.D. Pharmacology Graduate and experienced Practice Manager, with strong ties to North West Queensland, where he commenced running his first practice in Richmond, in 1999.

Chris has designed and managed a number of General Practices, including establishing and running Flinders Medical Centres in Cloncurry in 2005 (NW-QLD), Montville and Maleny (Sunshine Coast Hinterland), Richmond (NW-QLD) and Home Hill Surgery (N-QLD Coast). Chris has designed and project managed the construction of a number of medical centres including Richmond Surgery, Flinders Medical Centre Cloncurry and Maleny and Ochre Health – Eumundi. Chris is a current Board Director with North West Hospital and Health Service and Western Queensland Primary Health Network.

Previous relevant roles include Virtual Amalgamation Practice Manager for North West Queensland Division of General Practice and Accreditation Officer with General Practice Australia.

In his capacity as Practice Support Advisor, Chris hopes to assist practice owners and staff with various administrative aspects of Registrar placements and work with GMT to develop a program tailored as much as possible to meet the administrative requirements of medical service providers and registrars where ever they be located within the GMT footprint.

Chris has been the Practice Support Advisor for whole of program with Generalist Medical Training at James Cook University sine July 2016, where he is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer.

Chris has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Stirling in Scotland, a Doctorate of Philosophy in Pharmacology, from the James Cook University in Townsville and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Chris is currently completing a Masters of Business Administration, part time, through the University of Newcastle.

Chris started his career in medical management in 2001 with the North West Queensland Divisions of General Practice, where he provided onsite Practice Management support to  Hughenden, Richmond, Cloncurry Mount Isa, Winton, Longreach, Barcaldine and Blackall medical practices. In 2003 Chris became the Business Manager for North West Allied Health Services, coordinating allied health service delivery from a Mount Isa base, to the remote communities of North West, Central West and the Gulf Communities of Queensland.

Chris has 17 years of experience of co-owning and operating General Practice Medical Centres in rural communities such as Richmond and Cloncurry in North West Queensland, and Montville and Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. All of these medical centres became accredited GP registrar teaching facilities, many with shared registrar positions working between the practice and local hospital. Chris also has experience working with corporate medical practice, holding the the position of Queensland Operations Manager for Ochre Health between 2012 and 2014, where he was involved in the design and construction of a number of medical centres associated with the GP Superclinic Government program. Chris has also previously worked as a Practice Accreditation Surveyor for General Practice Accreditation (GPA).

Chris has been a Non Executive Board Director with the Western Queensland Primary Health Network since 2015, where he also Chairs the Finance & Risk Committee. Chris has also been a Non Executive Director of the North West Hospital and Health Board since 2013, where he also sits on the Quality Safety & Risk and the Finance an Risk Management Committees.
