Complete your training in Fiji

We are seeking expressions of interest in registrars who may be interested in spending either 6 or 12 months in Fiji from semester 2, 2018. This exciting opportunity will allow registrars to further develop their clinical skills while making a valuable contribution to patient care, in a well supervised low resource setting.  The opportunity has arisen due to an established successful collaboration between JCU and Fiji National University, and registrars will be employed by the Fijian government.

GP registrars in Fiji

About placement in Fiji

The main placement location is Nadi Hospital.  This is a busy 80 bed subdivisional hospital, serving a community of over 90,000 people.  The hospital has inpatient and outpatient services, maternity services and a 24 hour emergency department.  The general and specialist outpatient departments are particularly busy, and see a wide variety of acute presentations, as well as serving a population with high rates of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  Participating registrars will have support and supervision from the hospital's five senior medical officers, and work alongside approximately 17 local junior medical officers.  Additional support in the form of specialist phone advice and referral of complex cases is available from Lautoka hospital, approximately 30 minutes away by sealed road.  The town of Nadi is located next to Fiji's main international airport and close to popular tourist areas.

JCU will provide further support via regular teleconference education sessions, as well as site visits.

These placements will suit registrars who have completed all their mandatory terms and their assessments at the time of placement. Extended or advanced skills in emergency medicine, internal medicine, paediatrics, or obstetrics/gynaecology may be helpful but not essential.  Registrars displaying flexibility, resourcefulness, independence in their practice and a willingness to both learn and contribute within a different cultural context will be particularly well suited.
