Advanced skills

All Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program registrars pursuing a Fellowship with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), or a Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice (FARGP), must undertake training in an advanced skill at some stage during their training.

Known as Advanced Specialised Training (AST) for ACRRM and Advanced Rural Skills Training (ARST) for FARGP, these training posts are generally for a 52 week full-time term, except for surgery, which is a 24 month term. Dual fellowship pathway registrars will undertake a single 52 week term that will count towards both fellowships as an AST/ARST with 24 months in surgery.

Advanced Specialised Training (AST) is a compulsory requirement for registrars training on the ACRRM pathway. AST positions for the following training year are advertised to registrars who may then apply for a position in their preferred discipline. A wide range of ASTs are available including:

Advanced Rural Skills Training (ARST) is a compulsory requirement for registrars enrolled in a FARGP in addition to their vocational RACGP fellowship. FARGP is an opportunity for registrars to undertake an additional year of training in a skill pertinent to general practice in a non-urban setting. The FARGP year is ideally started once registrars have completed their RACGP exams. ARST positions for the following training year are advertised to registrars who may then apply for a position in their preferred discipline.

A wide range of AST / ARST areas are available, including:

Other AST disciplines are available as approved by the College. Please visit the ACRRM website for more information.

GMT supports and encourages all interested RACGP registrars to enroll in FARGP. For more information on FARGP including discipline curricula, please visit the RACGP website or contact your local GMT office.

How to apply for an AST/ARST term

The application process to undertake an AST/ARST term varies depending on the discipline selected. Certain disciplines are managed by the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP) intake, and others are managed through the Queensland Health Resident Medical Officers (RMO) campaign. GMT also manages community based placements through our annual GMT Placements Survey.

Registrars or future registrars interested in applying to undertake an AST/ARST term in 2019 should review the following information sheet as well as the tables of accredited training posts listed below:

2019 GMT AST/ARST community training posts

Community based AST/ARST training posts are typically organised through the annual GMT placements process. Discipline options for community based AST/ARSTs include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Population Health, Remote Medicine, Small Town Rural General Practice and others as determined by GMT. Please note the following:

  • Academic Practice can be undertaken from any community practice location in the GMT region and has additional funding provided by RACGP and/or ACRRM. Please visit the relevant college website for more information on application deadlines.
  • Population Health can be undertaken at any community practice location that is already accredited for ACRRM PRRT terms.
  • Remote Medicine ARSTs can be undertaken in most small rural towns in the GMT region.

If the location you are interested does not currently list an active accreditation in the table below, please contact your local GMT Medical Educators to discuss the possibility of obtaining the appropriate accreditation.

Registrars can register their interest in these posts by completing the GMT Placements Survey. For more information on important dates and how to apply, please review the How to Apply section above.
